The
WI takes a very strong role in raising money for charity. During the
course of a year numerous coffee mornings and jumble sales will be
held with all proceeds going to charity.

Every year our branch
choses a "charity of choice" to which all money raised will
go. Sometimes it is hard to identify a single good cause and in that instance,
as recently, we designated two charities and money raised was divided
between them. There is no restriction on what kind of charity we chose
but it is always local to us. One year it was the cancer ward of our local
hospital and the following year our charity choice was for two good causes,
a respite home for disabled childen called Little Acorns
and the other a local trust for an individual set up by her family entitled
The Louise Hamilton Cancer Help Bursary Fund. Last year the charity
money we raised went to the East Coast Hospice and Contact for children with special needs.
Our present project, and a great money earner, is hand sewn sock monkeys. So far we have finished over 700 of them. They seem to be especially popular in the local schools where they are used as a measuring aid in the relevant lessons.
We
recently visited our local horse sanctuary Redwings and have adopted
one of the horses there called Icky.
Our small yearly donation helps
to feed and care for the ponies and donkeys at the sanctuary. |
